Using your HSA for massage

I have lots of clients ask about paying for their massage therapy session with their Health Savings Account (HSA) card. So I did a little digging just before I went to get my own massage to see if I could use my card for payment. Please do your own research and ask your HSA company about what qualifies and what proof you need to keep for your taxes. Just because I can swipe it doesn’t mean it OK with Uncle Sam!

Below is what my HSA company said when I looked online. Looks like I can’t use my HSA card to pay for my massage on Friday since it isn’t recommended by a physician to treat a specific injury or trauma.

Perhaps, you could investigate using your HSA card if your dentist wrote you a letter of medical necessity to address your TMD. Or if your OB/GYN wrote a letter that you needed prenatal massage during your pregnancy. Do I need to see this note as your therapist? Nope. But you should file that note in your taxes along with basic receipts for your session.
